Do you have more than one machine, and does anything need to move between them automatically?
- No → Docker or Podman plus a process manager. Stop here. A single-node Kubernetes cluster is a lot of moving parts for an abstraction you are not using.
- Yes, and you want the Kubernetes ecosystem (Helm charts, operators, the tooling that assumes it) → take a small distribution: K3s, k0s, MicroK8s
- Yes, and you do not need that ecosystem → HashiCorp Nomad. Genuinely simpler, and the simplicity is the feature.
- You want someone else to run the control plane → GKE, EKS, AKS, OpenShift
- You just need a cluster on your laptop for tests → kind, Minikube, Colima
What is actually in this list
Twenty-four products across six jobs. Ranking Helm against EKS tells you nothing; Helm is a package manager that runs on EKS.
| Job | Products |
|---|---|
| Full orchestrators | Kubernetes, Nomad |
| Small Kubernetes distributions | K3s, k0s, MicroK8s, Talos Linux |
| Managed Kubernetes | GKE, EKS, AKS, OpenShift, Rancher |
| Local development clusters | kind, Minikube, Colima |
| Runtimes and builders | containerd, CRI-O, Docker, Buildah, Podman |
| Tooling on top | Helm, Kustomize, Portainer, Lens |
Compare: the smaller end
| Product | Licence | Stars | Shipped | Advisories (12m) | Score |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| K3s | Apache-2.0 | 33,826 | 2026-08-21 | 3 (1), HIGH | 49.9 |

K3s
Apache-2.0, free. 33,826 stars. Shipped 2026-08-21. 3 advisories, 1 in the last 12 months (HIGH).
A single binary with the real Kubernetes API. For something tracking upstream Kubernetes that advisory profile is unremarkable.
Pick it ifyou want a small Kubernetes cluster and the ecosystem that comes with it. Don't if you do not need the API; then Nomad is less to operate.
HashiCorp Nomad
16,873 stars. Shipped 2026-09-09. No known advisories. 1,972 dependent repos. Score 51.7, confidence 0.68.
Schedules containers and also non-container workloads, which is a real differentiator if you have binaries or batch jobs that were never containerised.
Pick it ifyou want orchestration without Kubernetes. Don't if you depend on Helm charts and operators.
Note our catalogue lists Nomad twice, once as the open-source project and once as a commercial subscription, and the two records are not consolidated on our side.
Nomad alternatives
| Leaving because | Go to |
|---|---|
| You need the Kubernetes API after all | K3s, k0s |
| You want managed | GKE, EKS |
| You only have one machine | Podman plus systemd |
| You want a UI over containers | Portainer |
Podman
Apache-2.0, free. 32,890 stars. Shipped 2026-09-16, the most recent release in this category. No advisories.
Daemonless and rootless.
Pick it ifyou want containers without a privileged daemon. With systemd it covers a surprising amount of single-host ground. Don't expect it to schedule across machines.
Runtimes, and how to read these numbers
| Runtime | Licence | Stars | Advisories | Last 12 months |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| containerd | Apache-2.0 | 21,267 | 20 | 5, HIGH |
| Helm | Apache-2.0 | 30,234 | 23 | 1, HIGH |
| Docker | Apache-2.0 | 72,082 | 13 | 4, HIGH |
| CRI-O | Apache-2.0 | 5,657 | 13 | 0, HIGH |
| Buildah | Apache-2.0 | 9,008 | 9 | 1, HIGH |
| Podman | Apache-2.0 | 32,890 | 0 | 0 |
The naive reading of this table is wrong. containerd's 20 advisories do not make it less secure than Podman's zero. Runtimes sit on the kernel boundary, are deployed at enormous scale and are examined by more security researchers than almost anything else here. A high count is largely a measure of scrutiny and disclosure discipline.
What to act on is the recent rate: containerd disclosed 5 in the last twelve months, Docker 4. That means your patch cadence for these needs to be real. containerd has 26,380 dependent repositories and is the runtime under most Kubernetes clusters, including ones whose operators have never thought about it.

How we scored this
Signals are properties of the software: licence, release cadence, published advisories, integrations, pricing transparency. No reviews, no company size, no web traffic, no vendor ad spend. Facts retrieved 2026-09-11. Full method · Independence
Confidence runs 0.21 to 0.73, and the composite should not be read as a straight ranking here, both because coverage varies and because the list mixes things that do not compete.
Two figures we found wrong and have excluded. Talos Linux is recorded with 110 GitHub stars because our data resolved to siderolabs/contrib rather than siderolabs/talos, which has 11,229. Red Hat OpenShift is recorded with a latest release of 2018-10-11, which reflects the archived openshift/origin repository. Both are being corrected.
Kubernetes itself has no recorded dependency or advisory data in our set despite 126,872 stars, so its score reflects thin coverage rather than a judgement.
