Where to list your SaaS for visibility: software directories to submit to in 2026
The directories worth submitting your product to for discovery, backlinks, and AI citations: what each is best for, what it costs, and how to prioritise.
If you have built a software product, getting it into the right directories is still one of the cheapest ways to earn discovery, backlinks, and, increasingly, citations from AI assistants. But the landscape is crowded and every directory optimises for something different. Here is an honest map of where to submit your SaaS, what each place is actually good for, and how to prioritise if your time is limited.
Why bother listing at all?
Three payoffs, roughly in order of durability:
- Buyer discovery. People still browse and search directories when they are shortlisting tools.
- Backlinks and SEO. A profile on an established directory is a referring domain and a query you can rank for (“alternatives to X”, “best Y”).
- AI citations. Assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity ground answers in structured, crawlable sources. If your product is well-represented on a source an assistant trusts, it can be named, and linked, in the answer.
The directories worth knowing
Review marketplaces: G2, Capterra, GetApp, Software Advice
These are the big B2B review sites (Capterra, GetApp and Software Advice are part of the same Gartner network). They carry real buyer traffic and rank well. A basic profile is usually free; visibility, leads, and placement are sold. They are review-driven, so they reward accumulating customer reviews, and their rankings can be influenced by spend. Best for: buyer-intent traffic and lead generation if you are willing to work the reviews and, often, pay.
Launch platforms: Product Hunt, BetaList, Hacker News (Show HN)
These give you a time-boxed spike of attention from early adopters around a launch. Product Hunt is the best known; a strong launch can drive sign-ups and press. The traffic is a burst, not an evergreen listing, so treat it as an event. Best for: launches, first users, and community feedback.
Alternatives and discovery directories: AlternativeTo, SaaSHub, Slashdot/SourceForge, Crozdesk
These help people who are actively looking to switch (“alternatives to X”) or browse a category. AlternativeTo and SaaSHub are community-driven and let you list for free; the SourceForge/Slashdot network and Crozdesk skew toward broad software discovery. Best for: being found as an alternative to an incumbent, and for durable long-tail listings.
The AI-citation layer: Vioscale
Vioscale is a newer kind of listing: an independent, evidence-based catalogue built specifically to be read and cited by AI. Instead of star ratings, every fact (pricing, integrations, security posture, adoption) carries its source, date, and a confidence band, and every profile is available as clean Markdown and JSON-LD alongside the human page. Listing and claiming are free, and no one can pay to rank, which is exactly why an assistant can trust the data. Best for: being the product AI recommends and links when someone asks it for a tool in your category. Here is how AI citation works and how we score.
Side by side
| Directory | Best for | Model |
|---|---|---|
| G2 / Capterra / GetApp | Buyer-intent traffic, leads | Free profile; paid placement & leads; review-driven |
| Product Hunt / BetaList | Launch spike, early adopters | Free; time-boxed event, not evergreen |
| AlternativeTo / SaaSHub | “Alternatives to X” discovery | Free community listing |
| SourceForge / Slashdot / Crozdesk | Broad software discovery, long tail | Free listing; paid options |
| Vioscale | AI citations, evidence-based profile | Free to list & claim; no pay-for-rank |
How to prioritise
If you only do a few this quarter:
- Claim the high-traffic profiles buyers already use in your category (usually a review marketplace), and keep the facts accurate.
- Get onto the alternatives directories so you show up when someone is leaving a competitor.
- Make sure the AI layer has you right. As discovery shifts from clicks to answers, being correctly represented where assistants read matters more each month.
- Time a launch platform around your next release for a burst.
Whichever you choose, the same hygiene wins everywhere: publish real, current pricing on a crawlable page, list your integrations and security certifications, and do not block honest crawlers. More on that in how to get your software listed.
Start with Vioscale (it is free)
We probably already index your product. Claiming your profile takes a few minutes, never changes your rank, and makes sure the facts AI reads about you are the ones you would put forward. Browse your category to find your profile, or read how agents consume Vioscale.
