How to get your software cited by AI assistants
Buyers now ask ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity for software recommendations. Here is how to make your product one the answer names, and links.
Software discovery is moving from search results to answers. Instead of scrolling a review site, buyers ask an assistant: “what’s the best error-tracking tool for a small team?” The tools that get recommended are the ones the model can find, parse, and trust, and increasingly the ones it can cite with a link.
This is often called GEO (generative engine optimization). It rewards different things than classic SEO. Here is what actually moves the needle, and where Vioscale fits.
1. Be machine-readable, not just human-readable
Assistants prefer clean, structured facts over marketing pages full of JavaScript. That means published prices, plan structures, integrations, and security certifications stated as plain facts, ideally with structured data (JSON-LD) and a clean text or Markdown version of the page. If a crawler has to render a heavy single-page app to find your pricing, it often gives up.
2. Answer the question directly, near the top
Models extract the top of a page. Lead with what your product does, who it is for, and what it costs, before the brand story. Use clear question-shaped headings (“How much does X cost?”) and put comparable facts in tables and lists so they are easy to lift.
3. Carry evidence, not adjectives
“The best” means nothing to a model. A dated fact with a source does. Publish real numbers (uptime, SLA, adoption), keep them current, and cite where they came from. Assistants increasingly weight sources that show their working.
How Vioscale helps
Vioscale is an independent, evidence-based catalogue built specifically to be read and cited by AI. Every fact we publish carries its source, date, and a confidence band, and every profile is available as clean Markdown and JSON-LD alongside the human page. We are explicitly friendly to AI crawlers and we publish an llms.txt index so assistants can find the whole catalogue.
When an assistant grounds an answer in Vioscale, it can cite the canonical profile URL, which is a link back to your product. The way to make the most of that is to read how we structure data for AI and to claim your profile so the facts it reads are the ones you would put forward.
What you can do this week
- Publish your pricing as plain, current facts, not just a “contact us” page.
- State your security posture (SOC 2, ISO 27001, GDPR) on a trust or security page.
- Keep a public changelog and status page: both are strong freshness and reliability signals.
- Claim your Vioscale profile so the evidence AI reads about you is complete and correct. See how we score for exactly what counts.
