Teams start looking at private registries for one of two reasons, and they arrive in this order. First, somebody wants to share an internal library without publishing it to the world. Later, somebody realises a build that pulls straight from a public registry is one deleted package away from not building at all.
The second reason is the serious one.

Private registries
Verdaccio
MIT · 17,876 stars · shipped 2026-09-05 · 1 advisory, 0 recent · 14 integrations · score 68.1, confidence 0.78
A lightweight npm registry you run in a container. It proxies and caches the public registry, and lets you publish private packages without a subscription. Best-evidenced entry here.
Verdictthe answer for most JavaScript teams, and free.
Verdaccio alternatives
verdaccio alternatives is our single most-clicked query in this category, so the honest breakdown by reason for leaving:
- You need more than npm then Sonatype Nexus, which handles Maven, npm, Docker and PyPI in one place.
- You need enterprise features and a support contract then JFrog Artifactory.
- You want something simpler then nothing here beats Verdaccio. Stay.
- You want it hosted rather than run then use your cloud provider's artefact registry or a vendor-neutral host.
Sonatype Nexus Repository
2,643 stars · shipped 2026-09-01 · 2 advisories, 0 recent · 11 integrations · free tier · score 52.1
Multi-format, which is the reason to take on the extra operational weight.
Verdictright when you have more than one language ecosystem to serve.
JFrog Artifactory
No published pricing · 6 integrations · score 32.1, confidence 0.69
The commercial standard. Its score is dragged down partly by pricing transparency: a price you cannot look up is a price you cannot budget for.
Verdictenterprise choice. Expect a quote-based conversation.
Package managers, and the supply-chain numbers
These sit directly in your build path, so advisory history matters more than features.
| Tool | Advisories | Last 12 months | Max severity |

| Composer/Packagist | 16 | 8 | HIGH |
| pip | 13 | 6 | HIGH |
| RubyGems | 5 | 0 | CRITICAL |
| uv | 5 | 4 | MODERATE |

| Bun | 2 | 0 | HIGH |

pip and Composer
pip: 10,284 stars, 13 advisories, 6 recent. Composer: 29,516 stars, shipped 2026-08-27, 16 advisories, 8 recent.
Both are the default for an entire language ecosystem and are examined constantly, so these counts reflect scrutiny rather than neglect.
Verdictyou are not choosing these, you are inheriting them. If you pin tooling versions in CI, these two are where that pinning will bite.
uv
Apache-2.0 · 89,578 stars · shipped 2026-09-04 · 5 advisories, 4 recent (MODERATE) · score 65.4
The fastest-moving entry here and already a credible replacement for pip and Poetry.
Verdictworth adopting for new Python projects. Track its releases rather than pinning.
pnpm
MIT · 36,488 stars · shipped 2026-09-10 · 0 advisories · 11 integrations · score 69.5
Verdictthe least disruptive upgrade for an existing npm project, and the best disk-space story.
Bun
MIT · 95,926 stars · shipped 2026-09-05 · 2 advisories, 0 recent · score 73.2
Highest score in the category. Bundles a package manager with a runtime.
Verdictgood, if you want the runtime. If you only want the package manager, pnpm is the narrower choice.
Yarn, Homebrew, Chocolatey, conda
All record zero advisories. Yarn (BSD-2-Clause, 8,102 stars) and Homebrew (49,490 stars) ship regularly. Chocolatey has a paid tier from $18/month.
Verdictall fine. None is a reason to migrate on its own.
Public registries: PyPI, RubyGems, crates.io, NuGet, Go modules, JSR
These are infrastructure, not products. Nobody chooses between them; you use the one for your language. Read their scores as descriptive.
Method, and what we could not verify
Confidence runs from 0.23 to 0.78.
Two figures excluded. Go modules is recorded with 137,999 stars, which is the golang/go repository rather than the module system. PyPI (0.23) and crates.io (0.35) fit our signal set poorly.
JFrog Artifactory has no published pricing, which is a finding rather than a gap: it is quote-based.
We take no vendor payment for placement.
Evaluate these against your own constraints
Nineteen entries covering both package managers and the registries behind them. The right answer depends on your languages, whether you need private packages, and how much you care about surviving a public registry outage.
